Animoca Brands targets crypto trends with stablecoins and Web3 gaming
Animoca Brands is exploring various crypto trends, focusing on real-world tokenised assets, AI projects, and Web3 gaming, according to Omar Elissar, Managing Director for the Middle East and head of Global Strategic Partnerships.
In an interview at Token2049, Elissar emphasised key areas the company is targeting.
These include stablecoins, the tokenisation of real-world assets, AI-crypto intersections, decentralised science, and Web3 gaming.
Elissar discussed Animoca’s ongoing interest in the gaming sector, describing it as “part of our DNA.”
He reflected on the state of Web3 gaming, acknowledging a lull in public attention but highlighting that progress is being made behind the scenes.
He noted that some newly released games have been "truly fun to play," a response to past negative perceptions about Web3 gaming.
Animoca Brands is known as a crypto-native venture capital firm, often seen as a gauge for emerging trends in the industry.
The company’s efforts in gaming are especially significant as the sector continues to evolve and innovate.
Earlier in 2025, Animoca Brands partnered with Standard Chartered Bank and Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) to develop a Hong Kong dollar stablecoin.
This stablecoin, overcollateralised and pegged to the Hong Kong dollar, awaits approval from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) before trading can begin.
This initiative is part of Hong Kong’s ongoing effort to establish comprehensive stablecoin regulations.
Additionally, Animoca entered a partnership with Sony's layer-1 blockchain network, Soneium, in March 2025.
The collaboration aims to create a digital identification system featuring anime characters as on-chain identities.
According to the company's fiscal report, Animoca Brands experienced a 12% year-over-year growth in "bookings" for its 2024 fiscal year, signaling continued growth and development in its crypto-focused ventures.
