FIFA shifts NFT platform to new EVM-compatible blockchain
FIFA has announced plans to migrate its NFT platform to a new Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain.
The move will support FIFA Collect, the organization's official NFT collection, which will be migrated from the Algorand blockchain.
The migration is scheduled to begin no earlier than May 20, 2025.
FIFA aims for the new blockchain to offer “better performance, future features, and improved scalability.”
The FIFA Blockchain will allow the organisation to enhance its fan experiences and NFT offerings.
FIFA explained that users would not need to take immediate action, as instructions will be provided when the migration process begins.
After the migration, external Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly will no longer be supported.
Instead, users will be able to connect to FIFA Collect via MetaMask or other EVM-compatible wallets that support WalletConnect.
NFT holders will also see their collectibles automatically listed on the new platform unless they choose to delist them before the migration date.
FIFA originally launched its NFT collection in collaboration with Modex ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup.
The organization also partnered with Mythical Games in November 2024 to launch FIFA Rivals, a soccer game designed for iOS and Android.
The full FIFA Rivals game is slated for release in the summer of 2025, while a pre-release is scheduled for May 2025.
According to Mythical Games CEO John Linden, FIFA Rivals has the potential to attract over 100 million gamers, driven by the success of its previous NFL Rivals game.
