Proton Launches Bitcoin Wallet with Self-Custody and Email Transfers
- Proton Wallet: Open-source, self-custodial Bitcoin wallet
- Sending Bitcoin via email simplifies transactions and reduces errors
- Focus on privacy and security, without intermediaries or centralized control
Proton, known for its privacy-focused services such as Proton Mail and Proton VPN, has announced the launch of Proton Wallet, a Bitcoin wallet with self-custody . Available for iOS, Android and web, the new wallet aims to offer a safer and simpler way to store and transact Bitcoin, reinforcing the company's commitment to privacy and financial freedom.
At the time of publication, the price of Bitcoin was quoted at US$97.260,81, up 0.7% in the last 24 hours.
Unlike centralized exchanges, Proton Wallet ensures that only the user has access to their private keys, using end-to-end encryption. This means that not even Proton can view the funds or transactions. The wallet is also open-source, allowing independent audits to verify its security and transparency.
One of the most innovative features of the launch is the ability to send Bitcoin with just an email, eliminating the need to share complex addresses and reducing errors or loss of funds. The process resembles sending an electronic message, making transactions more accessible for both beginners and experienced users.
Self-custody has been a central theme in the cryptocurrency market, especially after major platforms faced liquidity issues and blocked withdrawals. By ensuring that only the user has full control over their funds, Proton Wallet positions itself as an alternative for those seeking greater financial independence, without relying on third parties to move their crypto assets.
Security was also a priority when developing the wallet. In addition to advanced encryption, Proton Wallet offers a recovery system based on a 12-word passphrase, allowing users to restore their funds on any compatible service. Another unique feature is that the wallet automatically generates new Bitcoin addresses for each incoming transaction, making it difficult to track transactions and increasing privacy.
For now, Proton Wallet exclusively supports Bitcoin, but the company has indicated that it may add other cryptocurrencies or even fiat options in the future, depending on user demand. Unlike traditional companies in the sector, Proton is not an exchange or a token issuer, and positions itself as a non-profit organization dedicated to digital privacy.
With this launch, Proton reinforces its commitment to Bitcoin adoption, offering an alternative that combines privacy, security and usability for those who want greater autonomy over their crypto assets. The wallet is now available for download on all compatible platforms.
